I just wanted to check in to let you know that Nigel and I received our son on the 13th Nov at 1.30am after a sudden 5.5 hour labour at 34+2 weeks. His name is Coby.
We came to the hospital as I was experiencing lower stomach cramps and I was advised if ever that was to happen to get them checked due to special circumstances. We arrived and the hospital carpark and between walking from the car to the link bridge suddenly went into labour surging 2 minutes apart and surges not fully subsiding at any point, it was so intense.
Two midwives brought a wheel chair to the bridge for us as I was bent over a railing and couldn’t move any further. The midwife suggested I got on the wheel chair on my knees. I closed my eyes and focused on my breath and pretty much didn’t open my eyes again until he was born.
Once we were at the birth suite I could hear the midwife discussing antibiotics, continual monitoring and doing a speculum with Nigel. He knew all my preferences thoroughly which was a good job as I was unable to communicate right from the start of labour! He corrected the Dr who kept referring to my surges as contractions and after she mentioned signing a waiver multiple times I heard him whisper to the midwife he did not want the waiver mentioned within earshot of me again (which they didn’t) .
I allowed monitoring but was able to communicate that I wouldn’t be lying on the bed and they would have to work around that.
I laboured rocking on the birth ball and on the toilet, with Nigel physically supporting me and also kneeling at the edge of the bed. Nigel used light touch and described my bubble of comfort to me and I focused on my breath and staying inwards.
At one stage the midwife gently told me that they were concerned about the heart rate and did believe they needed to have a short stint of continual trace. I consented and then Nigel moved me on to my side on the bed. I could feel the downward pressure stop immediately. After a short period of time instinct told me nothing was going any further in that position and I moved to my knees leaning over the back of the bed and felt the difference immediately. Nigel used acupressure on my hands and back and requested the warm perineum compress he knew I wanted. He put clary sage on his hands for me to smell. When I started to flag, the midwife encouraged me by telling me I was close and Nigel put clary sage across my back and shoulders. As soon as the smell rushed up my nose I had the urge to bear down and he was here!!
We had a wonderful vaginal hypnobirth, needing no pain relief! The midwifes were respectful and calm about our choices, never mentioning pain relief.
Nigel was a true partner. I can honestly say that whilst I was the person labouring, we birthed our son together. It is the most wonderful feeling. We both felt empowered and positive. Nigel is talking about hypnobirthing and the importance of the birth partners role to anyone that will listen! 🙂
We are staying in GCUH special care while Coby puts on some weight (born at 1.82kgs) but he is coming on leaps and bounds.
I/we cannot thank you enough. The techniques we learnt and the knowledge and passion that you shared made our birthing such a positive experience.
I’ve attached a couple of pics that the midwife snapped immediately after the birth. One of them (you’ll know it when you see it!) sums up the moment I “resurfaced” after the birth, after I had handed Coby over for the medical team to do respiratory checks. 😂 I think my exact words to the midwife were “I’ve just had a fucking baby…. and this is the first time seeing your face!”
Thank you so much again.
Love & hugs
Sam
“These sessions with Kate are priceless!! Her enthusiasm and passion to help you create a positive birth experience are infectious This course leaves you feeling empowered, educated of the medical procedures and options you may be faced with leading up to and during your birth, and ready to deal with whatever turn your birth takes in a calm and informed way. It allows your birth partner to get involved and understand that they can have a positive active role in your birth experience. Hypnobirthing is soooo much more than meditation. If you’re not sure if this course is for you, it is! Do it! Thank you Kate .”
